In the second quarter of 2026, foreign arrivals to Italian reception facilities reached nearly 47 million, a slight decline of 0.8% compared to the same period in 2025. Meanwhile, overall visits surged to over 148 million, marking a 3.9% increase, reflecting a modest extension of vacation durations. Italian tourists accounted for 61.6% of these foreign visits, a 4.6% rise.

May saw the peak in foreign arrivals, up by 8.8%, including a 10.1% jump from overseas visitors, while Italian tourists made up 6.4% of the total. According to the Istat, tourist flows experienced a slight decline in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, but overall visits increased significantly (+3.9%), driven by international tourism demand.

The most notable growth occurred in May, with June being the most tourist-heavy month, representing 44.1% of the quarter's visits. The positive tourism performance applies to both hotel and non-hotel sectors, but with varying intensities: non-hotel activities saw a more than double increase compared to the hotel sector, with gains of +5.6% and +2.4% respectively.

The average stay for guests in reception facilities in the second quarter was 3.15 nights, up slightly from 2025, and higher for foreigners (3.34 nights) than Italians (2.88 nights). The hotel sector welcomed 27.6 million arrivals and 77.6 million visits, while the non-hotel sector contributed 19.3 million arrivals and around 70.3 million visits.

The biggest increase in visits came from non-hotel activities (+5.6%), compared to the hotel sector's (+2.4%). Non-hotel visits grew for both Italian (+4.2%) and foreign (+6.4%) tourists, showing a slightly more robust dynamic than in the hotel sector. In hotels, Italian tourists saw a modest (+1.7%) rise, while foreign visitors experienced a more substantial (+2.9%) increase.
