Mali attack kills dozens of soldiers, 5 Russian mercenaries

Last week, a devastating assault on a central army base in Mali resulted in the deaths of over 50 soldiers and five Russian mercenaries from Africa Corps, according to security sources. The Thursday attack on the Dioura military camp, which jihadists claimed responsibility for, is one of the deadliest attacks on the Malian army since the conflict began nearly a decade ago.

The camp, situated in the central region of Mopti, saw several dozen soldiers captured by the attackers. Following the incident, the Al-Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) swiftly asserted control over the Dioura barracks via their communication networks. Since late April, JNIM, along with its Tuareg separatist allies, has carried out a string of attacks intended to undermine Mali's ruling junta, including the capture of the northern city of Kidal and the assassination of the defense minister.

Mali has endured a severe security crisis since 2012, exacerbated by violence from jihadist groups allied with Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State, criminal organizations, and armed separatists. The country's ruling junta, which seized power through two consecutive coups in 2020 and 2021, has distanced itself from France and aligned more closely with Russia, both militarily and politically.
