Malaysian woman nabbed with 8kg cannabis at HK airport

A Malaysian woman, 33 years old, was apprehended at Hong Kong International Airport on September 12, after customs officials discovered approximately 8 kilograms of cannabis concealed within her checked luggage. The estimated value of the confiscated cannabis amounted to about HK$1.6 million (RM830,000).

Upon arrival from Bangkok, Thailand, the woman was subjected to a customs inspection. During the examination of her baggage, customs officers identified the illicit substance, leading to her subsequent arrest. Under Hong Kong's Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, penalties for drug trafficking can include a maximum fine of HK$5 million (RM2.6 million) and life imprisonment.

This arrest is part of a series of similar cases involving Malaysians at the airport. In July alone, three other Malaysians were caught with cannabis at the airport. On July 30, a 27-year-old Malaysian man was arrested after customs found 3 kilograms of cannabis worth HK$600,000 (RM311,000) in his luggage, following his arrival from Bangkok.

On July 16, a 19-year-old Malaysian man was apprehended after 11 kilograms of cannabis worth HK$2 million (RM1.04 million) was discovered in his checked baggage, after he arrived from Bangkok via Manila, Philippines. Lastly, on July 9, another 19-year-old Malaysian man was arrested after customs uncovered 3 kilograms of cannabis worth HK$500,000 (RM260,000) in his baggage, after arriving from Kuala Lumpur via Singapore.
