The CDU emerged as the strongest force at the local elections in Niedersachsen, achieving 27.2 percent of the vote, followed by the SPD with 24.6 percent, the AfD at 15.9 percent, the Greens at 14.1 percent, the Left at 6.0 percent, and the FDP with 3.7 percent, according to the regional election portal. Voter turnout was notably higher than in the previous cycle, with 64.6 percent of eligible voters casting their ballots, compared to 57.0 percent five years prior.

The AfD demonstrated the most significant improvement, securing its best-ever local election result in Niedersachsen. Meanwhile, the CDU and SPD both saw declines in support. The electoral turnout marked a substantial increase from the previous cycle, with nearly 6.3 million people participating in the elections, casting votes for the district assemblies, councils of non-municipal cities, and the Hannover regional assembly.

The AfD's performance gained particular federal political significance following their dominant showing in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt just a week earlier, where they secured nearly 44 percent of the vote, more than doubling their 2021 results. In Niedersachsen, voters determined the fate of 29,501 mandates across 2,182 local authorities, including mayors, deputy mayors, land commissioners, and regional presidents.

Upcoming local elections include the Berlin Senate and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State parliaments, where the dynamics between the AfD, CDU, and SPD will continue to be closely watched. In Niedersachsen, a new state parliament will be elected the following year.
