Iraqi butcher gets 10 years for selling pork in holy city

In the holy city of Najaf, Iraq, a butcher has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for selling meat he claimed was beef, but was actually pork. The Islamic faith categorically forbids the consumption of pork, which is considered impure. However, under Iraqi law, there is no explicit ban on the sale of pork, as it is a predominantly Muslim-majority country with a Christian minority population.

The butcher, arrested in recent months, had been selling approximately 75 kilograms of pork as beef. The court's decision was based on a 1998 law that criminalizes the sale of meat deemed unfit for human consumption, which includes dog, donkey, or other such meats. Najaf, a city of immense religious significance as the burial site of the Prophet Mohammed's granddaughter and son-in-law, Imam Ali, and the fourth Islamic caliph, attracts millions of pilgrims annually.

The butcher's arrest sparked widespread discussion on social media, with some Iraqis advocating for improved food safety measures, while others shared humorous content related to the incident. A local resident, Ahmad al-Mansouri, humorously remarked that he had consumed more pork than beef or lamb over the years, and had become a regular customer of the butcher.

Upon discovering the high quality and lower price of the meat, al-Mansouri started visiting the butcher more frequently, unaware of its true nature. He expressed surprise at the butcher's arrest and subsequent conviction.
