Iraqi butcher jailed 10 years for passing off pork as beef in holy city of Najaf

Najaf, a holy city in Iraq, has sentenced a butcher to 10 years in prison for selling pork as beef. The Supreme Judicial Council revealed that the man was caught with 75 kilograms of pork that he was falsely labeling as beef. Despite Islamic law forbidding pork consumption, Iraqi law does not explicitly ban its sale, although there is a 1998 law that criminalises the sale of meat unfit for human consumption.

The butcher was arrested this month and his case garnered widespread attention on social media. Among the deceived customers was Ahmad al-Mansouri, who jokingly shared that he had eaten more pork than beef or lamb in recent years.
