In a setback for diplomatic efforts, the Gulf States meeting scheduled to address the Strait of Hormuz crisis has been cancelled at the last minute, according to reports from Tehran. The cancellation was reportedly at the request of Saudi Arabia, who feared the conflict in Yemen was escalating. The Huthi rebels, allies of Iran, have recently pushed their forces towards the critical Bab al-Mandab strait, which could significantly affect regional trade.

Oman's Foreign Minister, Badr al-Busaidi, stated that the meeting's postponement was for the sake of consensus and did not provide a new date. The Huthi offensive has put a halt to the import of 20% of global energy exports through the Strait of Hormuz, and the Strait itself will not reopen until the US-imposed blockade ends. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil prices rose nearly 4% to $108 per barrel.

The conflict is further complicated by the advancement of the Huthi rebels in the Red Sea. Saudi Arabia has been fighting the Huthis for over a decade, while Iran has allegedly supplied them with drones and ballistic missiles, though denies involvement in the recent advances. Regardless, the rebels have taken control of key locations such as the port city of Mukalla and the island of Perim, extending their influence over Red Sea shipping.

Tensions have also risen between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with Riyadh accusing them of pro-Iranian forces in Iraq. The Gulf States have not yet agreed on a unified stance towards Iran, with Oman, Qatar, and Iraq attempting to mediate between the US and Iran, while the UAE supports mediation but Bahrain refuses any talks until Iran re-establishes diplomatic relations. The security and stability of the region remain uncertain as the conflict continues.
