Hamilton concedes F1 title to Antonelli after Madrid DNF: 'There's no stopping him'

Lewis Hamilton has conceded the 2026 F1 title to Kimi Antonelli following a lap 7 retirement from the Spanish Grand Prix. Lapping in fourth at the brand-new circuit in Madrid, Hamilton encountered brake problems that ended his race, leaving him 101 points behind Antonelli at the top of the standings. Hamilton reported, "I've got no brakes, guys," to his race engineer before being instructed to return to the garage after a chaotic race that began with a collision with Max Verstappen on Lap 1.

Verstappen, under team orders, returned the position after Lap 4 but immediately regained it, pushing Hamilton further down the standings. Having fallen 32 points behind Antonelli after the British GP, Hamilton has been the closest non-Mercedes competitor to challenge the young Italian this season. His teammate George Russell shared a similarly grim assessment of his own title hopes against Antonelli, who now leads by 81 points.

Hamilton acknowledged his race engineer's praise for Mercedes' performance in Spain, stating, "Mercedes this year, they've done a phenomenal job and they deserve it." Despite the setback, Hamilton expressed optimism about Ferrari's performance during the Spanish GP, with teammate Charles Leclerc finishing 4th. Hamilton remains hopeful of securing more wins in 2026, noting that both he and Leclerc have scored one victory each this season, at Barcelona and Silverstone respectively.

"I think we have a good car, we've had a pretty decent car, a good car this weekend and we will continue to try and improve it and we have better results coming in the future."
