UAE’s Riyan Malhan creates history in China

UAE's badminton prodigy Riyan Malhan achieved a historic milestone by winning the first-ever singles gold medal for his country at the prestigious Badminton Asia U17 Junior Championships held in Chengdu, China. The 16-year-old, who currently holds the top spot in the junior world rankings, showcased exceptional skills in the final, defeating Hong Kong China's fourth seed Zhan Shing Yui with a convincing 15-5, 15-9 score.

As the top-ranked participant, Riyan demonstrated remarkable composure and dominance throughout the match, securing a significant continental title for the UAE. This triumph marked a memorable championship for Riyan, who also earned a bronze in the boys' U17 doubles competition alongside fellow UAE player Adam Jeslin. His rapid rise to prominence began two years ago when he claimed an Asian Cup U15 bronze medal in 2024.

Now at the pinnacle of the U17 level, Riyan's success highlights the improving strength of the UAE's high-performance badminton development system, with aspirations to produce athletes capable of competing at the Olympic stage. The young champion became junior world No. 1 earlier this year and has ambitious plans ahead. His next targets include the Junior World Championships in Cairo in October, followed by the Youth Olympics in Senegal in November.

Riyan expressed his pride in the achievement, acknowledging the hard work, effort, education, and sacrifices that led him to the top of the junior rankings. He emphasized that this accomplishment is merely a stepping stone towards his ultimate goal of becoming the senior World No. 1. The UAE swimmer Hussein Shawky also made history in Thailand, while UAE chess prodigy Safin aspires to become the youngest world champion.

Meanwhile, young UAE badminton talent Rayan Ahmed continues to make waves from Dubai's fairways to U.S. collegiate history, and the nation's hopes for a podium finish at the LA Olympics in 2028 remain high.
