Government will not borrow to fund Accra-Kumasi Expressway – Ato Forson

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has stated that the government will not borrow funds to finance the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway. The full amount required for the 198.7-kilometre project will be available by December 2026, according to Dr Forson. Measures have been put in place to mobilize domestic resources to ensure the project proceeds without financial constraints once construction begins.

This assurance was made on September 14 at the handover ceremony of the 175.6-kilometre right-of-way cleared by the Ghana Armed Forces. Dr Forson emphasized that the expressway will cut travel time, reduce transport costs, improve road safety, and set a new standard for Ghana's infrastructure delivery. As the Minister for Finance, he assured the nation that the entire amount needed for the expressway's construction will be ready by December 2026 and that the government will not borrow a single pesewa for the project.

The new expressway is expected to enhance connectivity between Accra and Kumasi, reduce travel time and transport costs, and alleviate pressure on the existing road network, providing modern infrastructure to accommodate growing traffic along the corridor.
