GFA rejects claims Medeama, Nations FC exits expose GPL weakness

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has dismissed claims that the early exits of Medeama SC and Nations FC from CAF competitions indicate a weakness in the Ghana Premier League (GPL). Medeama, the reigning champions, suffered a 4-1 aggregate defeat to TP Mazembe in the CAF Champions League, while Nations FC were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup after a 2-1 aggregate loss to Mali’s FC Diarra.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum told Akoma FM that the situations of these clubs should not be used to argue the inferiority of the GPL. "PSG have won the UCL back-to-back, but Ligue 1 is not the best league in the world or even the best in Europe. So why should someone say the performances of Medeama SC and Nations FC in Africa demonstrate how weak the GPL is?

This is simply not a fact," Twum said. He added that even when Hearts of Oak dominated Africa, it did not mean the GPL was the best at that time. Twum urged people to refrain from making hasty conclusions and pointed out that if Samartex or Medeama win the league and then exit the African competition, it could simply mean they lack the necessary African exposure and experience.

Medeama will now focus on defending their league title against Vision FC, while Nations FC will compete in the Division One League starting September 8.
