Medeama and Nations FC receive $100,000 despite early CAF inter-club exits

Ghanaian football clubs Medeama SC and Nations FC have been awarded $100,000 each, despite both teams suffering early exits from the 2026-27 CAF inter-club competitions. Medeama, the reigning champions of the Ghana Premier League, were ousted by TP Mazembe of Congo in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League. The Ghanaian side lost 4-1 on aggregate after losing 1-0 in the first leg at TNA Park and eventually succumbing to a 3-1 defeat in the return leg in Lubumbashi.

Meanwhile, Nations FC, who were making their debut in continental competition, were eliminated from the Confederation Cup after losing 1-0 in Mali to FC Diarra in the first leg, and then drawing 1-1 in the return fixture at Accra Sports Stadium. The aggregate score of 2-1 in favor of FC Diarra secured their progression to the second preliminary round, where they will face ASKO Kara.

The financial reward serves as a consolation for the clubs following their early exits. Medeama will now focus on defending their Ghana Premier League title, while Nations FC will concentrate on their domestic campaign in the Division One League. The $100,000 payment also marks a significant step forward in CAF's efforts to provide better financial support to clubs participating in its competitions, particularly those eliminated at the earliest stages.

However, the departures of Medeama and Nations FC from the competition represent another disappointing continental campaign for Ghana. The country is now without a representative in the group stage of either of Africa's two major men's club competitions - the CAF Champions League or the Confederation Cup.
