GAF to formally hand over Accra-Kumasi Expressway Right-of-Way clearance today

On Monday, 14th September 2026, President John Dramani Mahama is set to host a ceremony to officially transfer the right-of-way clearance for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project. Organized by the Ministry of Roads and Highways in partnership with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the event will take place at 11:00 a.m. in Ejisu Kwaso, Ashanti Region.

The ceremony follows GAF's successful completion of clearing 175.6 kilometres of right-of-way in just 19 weeks, one week ahead of the scheduled 20-week timeframe. The military team cleared dense vegetation and navigated challenging terrain along the proposed six-lane dual carriageway, which stretches through parts of the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti regions.

GAF proudly declared the accomplishment as "delivering on mission ahead of schedule," showcasing the engineering prowess of its personnel and their expanding role in major national infrastructure undertakings. The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is a centerpiece of the government's Big Push Infrastructure Programme. Upon completion, the modern six-lane highway is projected to slash the travel time between Ghana's two largest cities from around six hours to roughly two hours, alleviate congestion, enhance road safety, and stimulate economic activity along the corridor.

Today's formal handover of the cleared right-of-way is viewed as a pivotal milestone, opening the door for the subsequent phases of the project, including the finalization of detailed designs and the selection of contractors for the main construction works.
