Funds for Accra-Kumasi Expressway will be in place by December, no borrowing – Ato Forson

Minister for Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has assured Ghanaians that the government will not resort to borrowing to fund the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway. The entire cost of the 175.6-kilometre project will be sourced domestically and available by December 2026, he promised. Speaking at the handover of the right-of-way on Monday, the minister highlighted that the expressway will reduce travel time and transport costs, enhance road safety, and set a benchmark for infrastructure delivery in the country.

He emphasized that the project will be funded entirely from domestic sources, pledging that they will not borrow any amount of currency for the construction. The arrangements for mobilizing the funds are already underway, and once the construction commences, it is expected to proceed without any financial obstacles. Upon completion, the 198.7-kilometre expressway will connect the southern and central parts of the country, alleviating pressure on the existing road network and improving road safety through modern infrastructure designed to handle increasing traffic. The handover marks the beginning of the project's next phase of preparation.
