On September 11, Croatian climber Maura Persic, who suffered injuries after falling while climbing Mount Kinabalu, has been rescued after a five-day Search and Rescue (SAR) operation. KOTA KINABALU: The Croatian climber rescued after falling while climbing Mount Kinabalu may face legal action for using an unauthorized route and climbing without a permit.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Jafry Ariffin stated that Sabah Parks had filed a police report regarding the incident involving Mauro Persic, 46, who is still receiving treatment. He said that the police and Sabah Parks are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the incident and the subsequent actions against the concerned climber once he recovers.

"The police and Sabah Parks are also investigating the cause of the incident. After that, it may be after (he) recovers before we discuss further," he said during a press briefing on the Sabah State Level Malaysia Day today. Jafry added that the concerned climber may be fined, but that depends on the outcome of the authorities' investigation.

The incident also needs to be a lesson for the public not to use unauthorized routes while climbing Mount Kinabalu as it can pose a safety risk. On September 11, 43 members of the search and rescue team successfully brought Persic down after a five-day operation that involved challenging terrain and rainy weather. The Croatian climber sustained injuries to her right leg and right ankle, as well as minor injuries to her hand, and was given initial treatment at Timpohon Gate before being taken to Ranau Hospital for further treatment.

The operation involved members of bomb disposal, Tactical Special Operations Rescue Malaysia (STORM) and Mountain Rescue and Recovery Unit (Mocsar), among mountain guides, porters, rangers, and other rescue agencies.
