After Gunung Kinabalu, porter conquers Chamonix ultra-trail

After an extensive year of preparation for one of the world's most challenging ultra-trails, Gunung Kinabalu porter Daved Simpat successfully crossed the finish line in Chamonix, France. The 44-year-old completed the 174km Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in 28 hours, 53 minutes, and four seconds. This accomplishment highlights the strength, discipline, and perseverance Daved built while assisting climbers in carrying loads up and down the mountain.

Daved, from Kampung Himbaan in Ranau, has spent most of his adult life working as a porter on Gunung Kinabalu, which stands at 4,095m above sea level. The same principles he employed during his time on Gunung Kinabalu can be applied to the ultra-trail — knowing when to run, conserve energy, and most importantly, not giving up when faced with adversity. As the first of seven Malaysians to finish the race after nearly 29 hours, Daved reflected on his family, friends, and the support he received throughout the journey.

The father of two emphasizes that his achievement should inspire fellow porters and youth in Sabah. He takes pride in his roots as a porter and does not see it as merely a stepping stone to becoming an international athlete. Daved states, "I want to show that our background is not a barrier. From a mountain in Sabah, a porter can also stand on one of the biggest ultra-trail stages in the world."

He is proud to represent Sabah and Malaysia on the international stage, believing that Sabah has much to offer, including its mountains, forests, talented people, and untapped potential.

For Daved, transitioning from hauling heavy loads on Gunung Kinabalu to completing one of the world's toughest races demonstrates that hard work, confidence, and perseverance can lead to achievements far beyond one's expectations.
