Company giving elderly, patients, PWDs their mobility back

Kenya's first dedicated accessible travel and transport company, Accessible Travel Kenya, has been established by Muthuri Kinyamu in 2022 to provide mobility solutions for the elderly, patients and people with disabilities (PWDs). The company has self-funded a fleet of six wheelchair-accessible vehicles, including Toyota Voxys, Esquires, Noahs and Sientas, equipped with ramps, powerlifts and swivel seats for airport pickups, city transfers and medical appointments.

Additionally, they have a fleet of safari-adapted 4×4 Land Cruisers, capable of handling rear- and side-entry, ramp configurations for national park game drives and rural outreach.

Beyond providing vehicles, Accessible Travel Kenya also rents out equipment like electric and manual wheelchairs, retractable ramps, shower seats and commodes by the day, enabling travellers to enjoy their holiday, hospital stay or family visit without being limited by their mobility. Their drivers and guides are trained in Basic Life Support and safe patient handling, ensuring passengers' safety and comfort during transit.

The company trains staff in disability etiquette, emphasizing respectful assistance, effective communication, and proper handling of mobility equipment. They have also partnered with a sign language safari interpreter program, allowing Deaf and hard-of-hearing travellers to fully participate in their experience. Accessible Travel Kenya has become an official ground-transfer partner for Kenya Airways and Safarilink, and a founding member of the Kenya Tourism Board’s Magical Kenya Medical Tourism Product Club.
