AG proposes Bar Welfare Fund to provide social protection for lawyers

Attorney-General Dr Dominic Ayine has proposed the creation of a Bar Welfare Fund to offer social security for lawyers in Ghana. This idea was presented during the Ghana Bar Association Conference 2026/27 on September 14, under the theme "150 Years of Ghana’s Legal Evolution: Transforming the Profession and Driving its Future with Industry."

The Attorney-General emphasized that welfare issues are particularly relevant for young lawyers and sole practitioners who typically lack the institutional support found in larger law firms. He noted that some young lawyers were resorting to bending professional rules in an effort to generate quick profits, which negatively impacted both their chambers and their clients.

Dr Ayine contrasted the situation of young lawyers with that of established law firms, which have the resources to support their staff and operations. He pointed out that without a robust welfare system, a sole practitioner facing illness, the inability to practice, or old age after decades of service would not receive any assistance.

Dr Ayine stated that the Ghana Bar Association still lacks a suitable welfare structure to meet the needs of its members. He proposed the establishment of the Bar Welfare Fund, which would receive government backing to provide the necessary social protection for legal practitioners. This initiative is part of the Attorney-General's broader efforts to strengthen the legal profession and improve the conditions under which lawyers practice in Ghana.

Dr Ayine highlighted that addressing the welfare needs of lawyers is essential to enable members to build sustainable careers while upholding the standards expected of the legal profession.
