World championship leader Antonelli wins Spanish GP

Kimi Antonelli secured his eighth victory of the season and extended his lead in the Formula One World Championship at the Spanish Grand Prix held in Barcelona. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver outpaced Max Verstappen of Red Bull and Lando Norris of McLaren, finishing well ahead of his Mercedes teammate, George Russell. This win brings Antonelli 81 points ahead of Russell in the title race.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished the race in fourth place, while both George Russell and McLaren's Lando Norris secured third and fifth positions respectively. Norris' position was jeopardized due to his team's decision to implement a two-stop strategy on the race track, causing him to lose valuable time. Norris' strategy was further hampered by a slow pit stop of seven seconds, which left him trailing in fifth place by the time he rejoined the race.

Charles Leclerc, driving for Ferrari, finished behind Norris and Russell, marking a strong performance for the Italian team. The top 10 also included Franco Colapinto from Alpine, Oscar Piastri from McLaren, Arvid Lindblad from Red Bull, and Niko Hulkenberg from Audi. However, the absence of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who had scored points in every race this season, was a significant setback for Mercedes, as the driver retired his Ferrari on lap seven due to a brake failure.
