Umno mahu kebebasan bangkit semula sebelum bentuk pakatan PRU16, kata penganalisis

Analysts argue that Umno deliberately avoids forming a political coalition ahead of the 2016 general election to rebuild its dominance before being tied into an alliance that could limit its policy space. Awang Azman Pawi from Universiti Malaya contends that if Umno forms a coalition too early, it risks being trapped in a seat distribution that does not accurately reflect its true strength and may lead to political dependence on allies rather than forcing the party to rebuild its Malay support base.

Umno's long-term strategy should aim to restore its electoral value as the sole party that other parties would want to collaborate with, not because of necessity, but due to its strength, according to Azman to FMT. Malaysia's unequal national politics make coalition formation more challenging to implement nationwide. While Umno-PAS might compete in certain states, it would compromise Umno's ability to capture mixed seats or maintain relationships with parties in Sabah and Sarawak.

Hisomuddin Bakar, Executive Director of Ilham Centre, suggests that a political coalition would close the space needed for Umno to rebuild its influence among Malay-majority seats, which are now dominated by the Perikatan Nasional (PN). Without clear evidence of support recovering for Umno, it might join seat distribution discussions in a weakened position.

In homogeneous regions, diversity among parties risks losing function, becoming weaker, and failing to produce new leadership. They discuss Umno's party leaders' desire to avoid being confined by a political coalition. Party Vice President Mohamad Hasan insists that any form of political cooperation for national unity must remain flexible, and Umno should remain within the Barisan Nasional (BN) now and forever.

Johor Umno Deputy Youth Chief Noor Azleen Ambrose reportedly stated that Umno should not be tied to another party at the state or federal level after the 2015 PRU. However, Hisomuddin believes that these leaders' statements should be interpreted as efforts to restore Umno's autonomy within the existing framework, rather than rejecting comprehensive political cooperation altogether.

Umno can still cooperate with other parties to meet immediate political needs, but such cooperation should not become a determining factor for the party's survival. In essence, Umno needs to restore its original strength as the primary platform for Malay politics first, followed by diversity and direct relations with the people.

Only after successfully regaining massive backing, broadening and verifying, can Umno have the freedom to determine the most profitable form of political cooperation. Awang Azman describes the concept of strategic flexibility introduced by Mohamad as Umno remaining part of BN but engaging in separate understandings with other parties depending on the state, election variables, and government stability.

Hisomuddin clarifies that this statement should not be interpreted as Umno's concern about cooperation with PAS for national unity; unity can still be pursued but Umno wants to ensure its identity, autonomy, and strategic importance are not compromised.
