Parts of Karachi may face water shortage due to power breakdown at Dhabeji: KWSC

Residents in certain areas of Karachi may soon experience water supply interruptions due to a power outage at the Dhabeji pumping station, according to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC). The Dhabeji pumping station serves as the city's main water intake point and is highly reliant on consistent electricity supply.

KWSC reported that power to multiple phases of the station was disrupted at 6 a.m. on Sunday due to a cable fault in K-Electric's system. The third phase, fourth phase, and K-3 Pump House at Dhabeji were affected, causing ten out of 21 pumps to become non-functional. KWSC officials are working with KE to restore electricity, and once power is restored, the 10 affected pumps will be made operational promptly.

The city faced a water shortfall of 48 million gallons on July 27 following a Dhabeji breakdown, impacting regions such as North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, and Scheme 33. An electricity outage at Dhabeji on July 28 had previously caused the K-2 Pump House to halt, specifically due to a faulty manifold chamber and main valves.

On June 1, Hub Pumping Station's supply to parts of Karachi was also suspended due to a fault in KE's main cable, resulting in a daily water shortage of 85 million gallons per day for the city. This marked the third consecutive day with power failures at key pumping stations, following a day where the North East Karachi Pumping Station experienced a similar disruption due to a KE main cable fault. On May 30, another emergency shutdown at Dhabeji forced closure of 10 out of 21 pumps.
