Over 31,000 evacuated in southern China amid heavy rains

Heavy rains have forced the evacuation of over 31,000 individuals in southern China's Hainan province, according to state media reports. By Sunday evening, authorities had relocated a total of 31,564 people, although no major disasters had been reported. Xinhua News, based in Beijing, cited the provincial committee for disaster prevention, mitigation, and relief in making this assessment.

The intense rainfall exceeded 300 millimeters in 24 townships spread across six cities and counties over the course of three days. Changfeng Township in Wanning County experienced the highest rainfall of 452 millimeters. Weather officials have predicted that more rain will continue through Monday.

In response to the torrential downpours, authorities have taken several precautionary measures. Schools and tourist attractions in several cities and counties have been closed, and traffic controls have been imposed on affected roads. Fire and rescue teams have been strategically positioned in key areas, with additional personnel and drainage equipment being deployed to Wanning, Qionghai, and Lingshui counties.

Local authorities have been closely monitoring the rainfall and water conditions to prevent flooding, urban waterlogging, geological disasters, and road and bridge submersion. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has launched a Level IV emergency response for Hainan Province as a tropical low-pressure system in the South China Sea moves toward coastal Vietnam. The system threatens southern China with torrential downpours and high disaster risks.
