Noida DM moves SC against Allahabad HC order reprimanding her for student's detention under NSA

A district magistrate in Gautam Budh Nagar has appealed to the Supreme Court to challenge a decision by the Allahabad High Court to dismiss a detention order under the National Security Act (NSA) against a Delhi University student, Akriti Chaudhary, following a workers' protest in Noida. The high court had ordered the magistrate, Medha Roopam, to pay Rs 5 lakh in compensation to Chaudhary, as well as to other officers perceived to have been responsible for her actions.

The high court deemed Roopam's handling of the case as "unworthy of derision" and demanded compensation to be recovered from her salary and that of her colleagues. The high court emphasized that the district magistrate's actions contravened Chaudhary's constitutional rights, specifically her right to free speech and expression, and that she should have considered how the general law might have protected a student activist with no prior criminal record who was advocating for workers' rights.
