Lim Guan Eng calls for unity to counter PAS and Umno’s racial, religious politics

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 — DAP leader Lim Guan Eng has urged Malaysians to stand together against what he characterized as the "dangerous brand of extremist politics" espoused by PAS and Umno post their respective party meetings. In a written declaration released today, Lim stated that the culmination of the PAS Muktamar and Umno General Assembly had exhibited political ideologies centered on religious and racial supremacy, violating the "core principles and fundamental tenets" of the Federal Constitution and the rule of law.

He alleged PAS had descended to "new lows" by publicly prohibiting non-Muslims from crucial Cabinet roles, while Umno was allegedly attempting to dismantle the governing coalition they belonged to, aiming to hasten the dissolution of the unity government to protect its leaders. Lim emphasized that Malaysians must unite to counter this perilous form of extremist politics and thwart policies that could endanger the nation state, as outlined in the Federal Constitution.

The DAP chief proposed ten measures to foster national unity in Malaysia's multicultural society and enhance integration between Sabah, Sarawak, and the Peninsular. These include adhering to the Federal Constitution and the rule of law, safeguarding democracy and the separation of powers, and preserving the autonomy of Sabah and Sarawak.

Lim also advocated for the protection of constitutional rights of all Malaysians irrespective of their race, gender, religion, or background, alongside initiatives to foster economic growth, diminish bureaucratic red tape, and lower taxes, utility, compliance, and regulatory costs. He suggested economic benefits should be distributed more equally, particularly among the 17 million-strong workforce, via measures to reduce the cost of living and curb "toxic rentier economic practices and crony capitalism".

Regarding education, Lim emphasized the need for excellence and a merit-based curriculum, a unified examination system to address Malaysia's declining PISA rankings, and enhanced protection for the environment and cultural heritage. He also proposed better healthcare for all and improved access to affordable digital education and opportunities, coupled with protections against scams and cyberbullying.

Lim stressed the importance of investment in physical infrastructure to provide well-maintained roads, efficient public transport, and dependable power and water supplies.
