Health Ministry preparing for possible rise in public hospital patients amid soaring insurance costs

George Town, September 13 - The Ministry of Health (MOH) is actively anticipating a potential surge in patients at public hospitals due to the sharp increase in health insurance costs. Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Mahathar Abd Wahab explained that this proactive planning and forecasting of healthcare service requirements are integral to both short-term and long-term strategies within the public healthcare system, encompassing financial provisions to accommodate evolving demands for medical services.

During a press conference following the 2026 Malaysian Trauma Conference, Dr Mahathar addressed concerns about health insurance premiums, which have surged by up to 20 percent yearly, expressing worry over their potential to exacerbate the financial strain on the public and diminish demand for public healthcare services. The ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Finance through a joint committee to investigate this issue, including the government's Medi-Asas programme, a medical protection plan intended to offer Malaysians more cost-effective and enduring health coverage.

While insurance-related matters are primarily overseen by different regulatory bodies, Dr Mahathar emphasized the ministry's commitment to addressing the financial implications of escalating insurance costs on public healthcare access.
