Health Ministry preparing for possible rise in public hospital patients amid soaring insurance costs

On September 13, the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Malaysia is proactively preparing for potential surges in public hospital patient numbers due to escalating insurance costs, according to Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Mahathar Abd Wahab. The MOH routinely forecasts healthcare service needs to cater for possible increases in public hospital patient volumes as health insurance expenses soar.

Dr Mahathar elucidated that these projections are integral to both the short-term and long-term planning of the public healthcare framework, encompassing the requisite financial provisions to accommodate anticipated demand fluctuations for healthcare services. He made these remarks during a press conference following his inauguration of the Malaysian Trauma Conference (MTC) 2026.

Reports attributed to Tan Sri Michael Yeoh, President of the KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, highlighted the growing concern over health insurance costs which have been increasing by as much as 20 percent annually. This rapid escalation in insurance expenses poses a significant threat to the financial stability of Malaysian citizens, which in turn could potentially impact the demand for public healthcare services.

Dr Mahathar acknowledged these apprehensions and affirmed that the MOH and the Ministry of Finance (MOF) are collaborating through a joint committee to scrutinize the issue, with a focus on the government’s Medi-Asas programme - a medical protection plan aimed at delivering Malaysians more economical and sustainable health coverage.

Regarding insurance-related concerns, Dr Mahathar emphasized that these matters typically fall within the domain of regulatory bodies that govern insurance premiums, hence the Ministry of Health does not typically oversee these aspects.
