China steps up AI push with open-source zone for Brics countries

China is spearheading the establishment of an "open-source zone for artificial intelligence" for Brics nations, President Xi Jinping announced at a summit in New Delhi on Sunday. Chinese AI firms are known for producing world-leading open-source AI models, where the underlying code is accessible for users to adapt, while US developers have often favored closed-door approaches.

This initiative, as part of Xi's "open-source and inclusive AI" strategy, promises to support cooperation in developing and applying large language models, according to CCTV. The plan also includes creating specialized research and training in AI for Brics countries, with the aim of building an open ecosystem for AI. Brics, which comprises China, Russia, and India, was founded in 2009 as a forum for major emerging economies aiming for greater influence in institutions dominated by Western powers.

Xi further advocated for a "broad, consensus-based global AI governance framework". Xi is slated to visit the United States this month for talks with President Donald Trump, and AI governance is expected to be part of their discussions, as concerns rise about potential loss of control over rapidly advancing technology.
