BRICS leaders back AI in education, push for global university ranking system

BRICS leaders endorsed the sharing of best practices in education and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in human-centered learning on Saturday. They also discussed the potential development of a BRICS University Global Ranking and Evaluation System. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in education as a driver of sustainable development and inclusive growth.

They welcomed India's initiative to circulate BRICS Guiding Principles on traditional and indigenous knowledge systems and encouraged the BRICS Network University to consider including these systems as an additional International Thematic Group (ITG). The leaders supported continued cooperation through existing BRICS education mechanisms, including the BRICS Network University, and encouraged the sharing of best practices in early childhood care and education, foundational literacy and numeracy, mutual recognition of qualifications, academic and professional mobility, and digital literacy.

They also emphasized the importance of safe, ethical, human-centered use of emerging technologies in education, particularly AI. The leaders looked forward to the BRICS Rectors Forum, BRICS Education Olympiad, and the development of the BRICS University Global Ranking and Evaluation System. They recognized the role of the BRICS TVET Cooperation Alliance in building a multilateral platform for technical and vocational education and training (TVET) cooperation and expressed anticipation for the Biennial Progress Report and Compendium of Sustainable Skill Initiatives.
