China’s Xi proposes BRICS ‘open-source AI zone’

China's President Xi Jinping announced at a BRICS summit in New Delhi the formation of an open-source AI zone for the 11-member bloc, according to CCTV. This initiative aims to promote collaboration and equal access to advanced artificial intelligence technologies among BRICS nations, including China, Russia, and India.

China's AI industry has been at the forefront of producing open-source models, with their underlying code accessible for adaptation by users, as opposed to the closed-door approach favored by US developers. Xi's proposal also includes supporting the development and application of large language models, as well as establishing specialized research and training programs in AI for BRICS countries.

The objective is to create a comprehensive, consensus-based global AI governance framework, as emphasized by Xi. His remarks come as the BRICS group seeks to assert its influence in institutions dominated by Western powers and address growing concerns about the potential loss of control over rapidly evolving AI technology. Xi is anticipated to visit the United States this month for talks with President Donald Trump, where AI governance is expected to be a key topic of discussion.
