At least 6 dead, 130 missing after Indonesian ferry capsizes, officials say

A ferry carrying 243 people capsized in the Java Sea on Sunday, resulting in at least six fatalities and 130 people still missing, according to local officials. The vessel, named Virgo Transport 8, was on a journey between Java and Borneo when it lost contact. Indonesian Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, speaking at a press conference in Banjarmasin, stated that 107 individuals had been successfully evacuated.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, with officials exploring natural, technical, and human factors. Ships and helicopters have been mobilized for the search and rescue efforts. Survivor videos released by the National Search and Rescue Agency reveal individuals in life-rafts being rescued from the sea, while others have been treated on another ship. This incident echoes a previous ferry fire off Madura Island last month, which claimed five lives.
