At least 129 missing, 6 dead after ferry overturns in Indonesia’s Java sea

Indonesia reported that six individuals lost their lives and 130 others remain missing after a ferry capsized off the coast of Java on Sunday, according to rescue agencies. The disaster occurred when the Virgo Transport 8, en route between Java and Borneo, encountered severe weather conditions. The ship, carrying 243 passengers and crew members, initially lost contact with its shipping company early Sunday morning.

Basarnas, the national search and rescue agency, confirmed six fatalities and 130 people remain missing, with 107 individuals already rescued. Indonesian Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi stated that the vessel capsized but had not sunk at the time of the latest update. The ship's captain had previously notified the owners of its tilting, which posed a significant risk to the rescue efforts.

Waves reaching up to 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) hampered the rescue operation, particularly for larger vessels like the 40-meter-long Basarnas helicopter involved. The last detected location of the ferry was approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) from its intended destination in the Java Sea. Local authorities, including the Banjarmasin Sea Port Authority, emphasized the top priority of ensuring the safety of all onboard and initiated a coordinated rescue operation from Banjarmasin port.

Relatives and friends of the passengers gathered at the command center, anxiously awaiting updates on their loved ones. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Indonesia, a vast archipelago dependent on maritime transport, in maintaining safety standards amidst unpredictable weather patterns and lax regulatory measures.
