Indonesia says six killed, 130 missing after ferry capsizes off Java

Banjarmasin, Indonesia witnessed a tragic ferry accident on Sunday, resulting in at least six fatalities and 130 people reported missing. The Virgo Transport 8, a ferry carrying 243 passengers and crew, lost communication with its shipping company early Sunday morning after departing from Surabaya in East Java. Indonesia's national search and rescue agency, Basarnas, reported six deaths and 130 missing individuals, with 107 people already rescued.

The ship, which had a total of 213 passengers and 30 crew members, was found to have capsized, according to Indonesian Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi. The vessel had lost contact at around 2:00 am, and rescuers had to navigate through waves reaching up to 2.5 meters. A Basarnas helicopter joined the operation to aid in the rescue efforts.

The last known location of the ferry was in the Java Sea, approximately 150 kilometers from its destination. Rescuers are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of all those on board the capsized ferry.
