Police say one killed, six vehicles torched in violence at Kindiki meeting in Embu

The National Police Service condemned a violent incident that took place during a public meeting held by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in Nembure, Embu County on Saturday. Police spokesman Muchiri Nyaga stated that a group of individuals tried to storm the meeting, leading officers to intervene and repel the attackers. The spokesman confirmed that several suspects were arrested and the Deputy President was safely evacuated, ensuring order was restored.

However, the event resulted in one person losing their life, six vehicles being torched, and multiple others sustaining injuries. Investigations were launched to determine the full circumstances surrounding the violence, with authorities pledging to pursue those involved. The police emphasized their commitment to protecting life and property, and vowed to take stern action in line with the law.

The chaos erupted when hundreds of youths attempted to access the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting, which was limited to invited officials and designated participants. The restrictions caused a confrontation, with police firing teargas to disperse the crowds. Some youths retaliated by throwing stones at police and into the stadium, leading to further clashes and the burning of some vehicles belonging to delegates.

Portions of the Embu-Meru Highway were also affected, with groups of youths allegedly barricading roads and setting bonfires. Kindiki addressed the meeting with UDA grassroots leaders, urging for political tolerance and peaceful competition. He questioned the use of young people to disrupt political gatherings and warned that such actions could alienate supporters.

Kindiki called for political parties to be able to hold meetings peacefully and assured security for all political formations. He also cautioned UDA supporters against being used to disrupt political events, stating that such actions would harm the nation. The UDA Party expressed regret over the loss and damage caused by those responsible for organizing the youths to disrupt their meeting and pledged to coordinate responses with those affected.
