PlayStation gambles with 18-rated Wolverine game - will it pay off?

Sony is set to launch Marvel's Wolverine, an exclusive PlayStation 5 title, on Tuesday. Developed by Insomniac Games, the studio behind the popular Spider-Man games, Wolverine features an 18-rated Pegi rating in the UK, prohibiting its purchase by minors due to graphic violence, blood, and gore. The game places the player in the shoes of Wolverine, the comic book superhero known for his healing abilities and retractable claws, allowing them to slash enemies with a high level of bloodshed.

Combat is fluid and easy to master, while unlockable powers and a rage-based health regeneration system enhance gameplay. While the game's length averages around 20 hours, the reviewer notes that it could have benefitted from more gameplay and fewer cutscenes. Director Mike Daly acknowledges the risk of targeting a mature audience, but believes it was necessary to adhere to the character's violent nature.

Despite the lack of open-world exploration, the game's linear structure, top-notch performances, and tight combat mechanics have left a positive impression on the reviewer, suggesting that Sony's gamble may pay off.
