Iceland to open first store in the Falklands

Supermarket Iceland is set to open its first branch in the Falkland Islands in December, according to Lord Richard Walker, the company's boss. Walker, speaking via LinkedIn, stated that the store would be the first UK high street brand to open in the territory. The shop will be located in Stanley, the capital, which has a population of approximately 3,500 people.

Walker, whose Welsh business is based in Deeside, Flintshire, said the company is expanding internationally and has been eyeing the Falkland Islands for some time. He described the Falkland Islands as having an underserved market with a lack of competition. Walker noted that the timing of the opening coincides with geopolitical tensions, with Argentine President Javier Milei recently claiming the islands are historically and legally Argentine.

The Stanley store will be a partnership with Kelper Stores, part of the Fortuna group. Walker expressed his intention to visit the island to cut the ribbon and open the supermarket, estimating that prices will be about 30% lower than competitors on the island, providing much-needed value to the market.
