Dr Bawumia expresses sympathy with farmers over their inability to sell their produce even at reduced prices

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party's presidential candidate for the 2028 elections, has voiced his sympathy for Ghanaian farmers who are struggling to sell their crops even at reduced prices. During a meeting with the National Seed Trade Association of Ghana (NASTAG) leadership in Accra, Bawumia emphasized the unacceptable nature of the situation and pledged to introduce comprehensive reforms to safeguard farmers and promote food sovereignty.

NASTAG, representing certified private seed producers, highlighted that Ghana's food security is at risk due to the importation of 90% of vegetable seeds and the influx of food commodities flooding the local market. This has left farmers with surplus maize, rice, and soybeans they cannot dispose of, even at lower prices. Other issues raised included regulatory loopholes in the National Seed Policy, the misuse of public seed procurement by political seed merchants, and infrastructure problems.

Bawumia acknowledged the farmers' plight and expressed his commitment to investing in research and sector transformation, emphasizing that agriculture is essential for national development. He assured that his administration will work closely with NASTAG to find practical solutions to the farmers' challenges.
