BRICS summit statement stresses need to safeguard global trade, supply chains and energy flows

President Cyril Ramaphosa urged Brics leaders to champion multilateralism, reform the United Nations, and uphold accountability for international law violations during the summit in India. Speaking at a session on inclusive global governance, Ramaphosa emphasized the UN's relevance is at risk if it fails to adapt to today's global realities.

He highlighted the US-Iran conflict's impact on global energy security and trade concerns. The summit, led by South Africa, brought together government officials, business leaders, and prominent figures to discuss trade, investment, innovation, and strengthening economic ties. Ramaphosa criticized the UN Charter abuse and sought accountability for ongoing Palestinian genocide, Sudan's crimes, and Iran's unlawful war.

He criticized the unjust exclusion of Africa from the UN Security Council's permanent representation, emphasizing the need for comprehensive reform. South Africa advocated for four key Brics contributions: remaining a united voice for reform, showcasing multilateral cooperation's practical benefits, shaping fairer global governance, and bridging geopolitical divides.

Ramaphosa stressed the importance of strengthening multilateralism through reform and action, upholding international law, and ensuring no one acts with impunity as Brics members shape the future international order.
