Anwar calls for 'maximum restraint' as Middle East conflict drags on

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has urged all sides to demonstrate utmost restraint as the conflict in the Middle East persists. During a private meeting with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian at the 18th BRICS Leaders Summit, Anwar expressed Malaysia's grave apprehension regarding the growing tensions in the region. He cautioned that prolonged conflict could have far-reaching consequences, threatening regional peace, stability, and the global economy.

Anwar emphasized the significance of preserving freedom, safety, and security of maritime navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global energy supplies. He also advocated for resuming dialogue and diplomacy to address differences and ease tensions. The brief meeting, held at The Oberoi Hotel, marked Anwar's initial bilateral encounter at the onset of his BRICS program.

He expressed satisfaction with the historical diplomatic ties between Malaysia and Iran, reiterating Malaysia's dedication to strengthening bilateral cooperation in various shared interests. Industry and Trade Minister Johari Abdul Ghani, Human Resources Minister R. Ramanan, and other members of the Malaysian delegation also participated.

The leaders are anticipated to deliberate on expanding bilateral trade and investment, focusing on sectors like energy, agriculture, palm oil, food security, the halal economy, technology, and higher education. This meeting underscores Malaysia's aim to utilize its BRICS membership to deepen economic engagement with emerging markets, with Iran's participation offering additional prospects for trade, investment, and economic collaboration.

The two nations have previously identified areas for enhanced cooperation, encompassing trade, investment, education, healthcare, and research.
