Modi faces BRICS unity test as Middle East war deepens

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted on Saturday that the Middle East does not require the United States to act as a regional enforcer, amid ongoing hostilities and territorial disputes. Speaking at a BRICS summit in India, the Iranian leader emphasized that peace should be the top priority, despite the hardships endured by his nation. Pezeshkian's remarks came during a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, highlighting the significance of regional stability.

The conflict erupted on February 28th following US and Israeli strikes that claimed the life of Iran's supreme leader. In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks across the Middle East, effectively controlling the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This waterway, which previously facilitated one-fifth of the world's oil shipments, has since become a focal point of contention between Iran and the United States.

As Iran continues to monitor vessels entering the strait and imposes service fees, the blockade has contributed to soaring oil prices, surpassing $100 per barrel. Despite the region's suffering, Pezeshkian reiterated Iran's commitment to peace, emphasizing that the territorial integrity and security of the Middle East can only be ensured by its constituent countries.
