Accreditation: ASUU kicks against ministerial committee

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has demanded that the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, dissolve a newly established Ministerial Committee on Strengthening Accreditation and Quality Assurance Systems for Tertiary Institutions. The union president, Prof Chris Piwuna, acknowledged the need for better oversight of accreditation procedures but argued that the responsibility should lie with the National Universities Commission (NUC) rather than the Federal Ministry of Education.

Piwuna warned that the committee could undermine NUC's authority, stating that the NUC should be tasked with cleaning up the process. The minister had appointed the committee to review existing accreditation policies, standards, and guidelines, with the aim of modernising the accreditation system into a continuous, digital, and data-driven quality assurance system.
