York police boost patrols, deploy mobile command posts for Jewish High Holidays

York Regional Police (YRP) plan to increase patrols and set up mobile command posts in key community areas as Jewish High Holidays commence. In a media release on Friday, police informed residents that they may notice an increased police presence near synagogues, Jewish community centers, faith-based institutions, malls, and neighborhood gathering spots.

Officers assigned to the command posts will be available to interact with residents, process reports, and address safety concerns. The measure is part of a proactive safety strategy aimed at ensuring community members can observe Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and other High Holiday events without fear. "We are in constant collaboration with community safety, law enforcement, and intelligence partners at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels, proactively monitoring the situation with a focus on preventing hate-motivated activity," the police force declared.

Hate, bigotry, and violence have no place in York Region. The mobile command posts will operate from noon to 10 p.m. at various locations throughout September and early October, rotating weekly. Garnet A. Williams Community Centre in Vaughan will host a post on September 12, 20, 26, 29, and October 5, 7, 10. Promenade Mall in Thornhill will feature a command post on September 13, 21, 27, 30, and October 2, 8.
