Umno belum cukup kuat untuk tuntut semua terima ‘Rumah Bangsa’

Analysts suggest the Umno political standing is not strong enough to demand all parties accept the concept of 'House of the Nation'. Tawfik Yaakub from the University of Malaya pointed out that with only 26 parliamentary seats, Umno can only engage in dialogue and cannot dictate the framework of cooperation. PAS holds more seats and has separate strengths in majority Malay states.

While PAS may agree with the agenda of uniting Malays-Muslims, it is not certain if it accepts 'House of the Nation' if it implies all parties must be under Umno's leadership. Should this agenda be discussed with Pakatan Harapan, the latter would likely be more inclusive and open to a multi-ethnic political approach. Tawfik believes the concept needs to be formed through discussions and not determined unilaterally by Umno.

He commented on the statement by Umno Vice President Mohamad Hasan at the Umno Grand Assembly (PAU) 2026 on Wednesday, emphasizing that any Malay political cooperation should be based on the spirit and aspiration of 'House of the Nation'. He stressed that such cooperation must be under the umbrella of Umno and must define Umno as the foundation, the axis, and the core principle binding all Malay interests; and Umno wishes to continue being the shelter for efforts to unite Malays.

Tawfik noted that Muafakat Nasional's evidence shows the sentiment of uniting Malays is insufficient, and doubts long-term cooperation in today's flexible and fluid Malaysian politics. Bilcher from Universiti Malaysia Sabah argued that the demand for cooperation based on 'honest intent' needs to be translated into clear agreement, fair power-sharing, and reciprocal commitment.

He reminded that each party has its own interests, and placing 'House of the Nation' as an absolute condition for cooperation resembles demanding other parties to submit under Umno. So long as this idea positions Umno as the shepherd and the primary beneficiary, it would be seen as an effort to restore Umno's dominance, rather than forming an equal partnership.
