Umno belum cukup kuat untuk tuntut semua terima ‘Rumah Bangsa’

Analysts argue that Umno's political standing is not strong enough to insist on all parties accepting the concept of Rumah Bangsa. Tawfik Yaakub, from the University of Malaya, stated that Umno, with only 26 parliamentary seats, can only negotiate and cannot dictate the framework of cooperation. Although Umno still holds influence, PAS has more seats and separate strength in majority Malay states.

PAS may agree with the agenda of Malay-Islamic unity but is not necessarily accepting the concept of Rumah Bangsa if it means all parties must be under Umno's leadership, he told FMT. If this agenda were discussed with Pakatan Harapan, the coalition would be more diverse and more likely to adopt an inclusive political approach. Therefore, I see this idea needing to be formed through joint discussion and not determined unilaterally by Umno, he added.

He discussed the statement by Umno Vice President Mohamad Hasan at the Umno Grand Conference (PAU) 2026 on Wednesday, that any Malaysian political cooperation must be based on the spirit and aspiration of Rumah Bangsa, stating that non-transparent cooperation based on specific visions would not benefit Umno. He stressed that such cooperation must be led by Umno, making Umno the foundation, pillar, and core principle that unites all Malay interests; and Umno wants to continue being the umbrella for the effort to unite Malays.

Tawfik said Umno needs to explain the true meaning of Rumah Bangsa, whether it is about former party members, election cooperation between Malay parties, or efforts to restore Umno as the parent party of Malays. Without clear explanation, the idea could be seen as simply an attempt to regain dominance and give advantage to Umno, he said.

He said the National Accord proved that the sentiment of Malay unity was not enough, and he doubted long-term cooperation in Malaysian politics that is fluid and flexible now. Balcher from Universiti Malaysia Sabah said that claiming cooperation based on genuine intention needed to be translated into clear consensus, equitable power sharing, and reciprocal commitment.

He reminded that each party has its own interests, and said positioning Rumah Bangsa as an absolute condition for cooperation resembles demanding other parties to be under Umno. As long as the idea places Umno as the main provider and beneficiary, it will be seen as an attempt to restore Umno's dominance rather than forming a shared equality, he told FMT.
