School resumption: Abuja hairdressers record increased patronage

Hairdressers in the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding regions have noted a surge in business since schools reopened for the new academic year, according to interviews with NAN. Parents are gravitating towards simple, budget-friendly hairstyles due to the increased cost of living and spending restrictions. Mrs Grace Moses, a hairstylist, explained that her clientele previously shunned school holidays as parents favored at-home haircuts.

However, she reported a substantial uptick in business since schools reopened. Popular styles like ‘All-back’ and ‘Chuku’ now average around N1,000, attributed to the growing demand and higher operational costs. Miss Alice Raphael, another hairstylist, shared that her Saturday appointments, which once averaged 10 clients, now exceed 20.

This growth can be attributed to parents' efforts to ensure their children's neat appearance for school. While the cost of hairstyles has risen, ranging between N800 and N1,200 based on age and style, she acknowledged that parents are forced to prioritize expenses due to economic pressures. Hairstylists also pointed out that children are required to follow school-approved hairstyles, limiting parents' choices.

Pwal, with 25 years of experience, noted that despite higher charges, demand remains steady during the school resumption period. However, she expressed concern over the rising cost of living, which affects both service providers and parents balancing school requirements with household expenses. The hairstylists' experience illustrates the broader effects of rising living costs on everyday expenses, including routine tasks such as children's haircuts for school.
