Reed dance kicks off KZN heritage month celebrations

The annual reed dance is set to commence at the eMashobeni Royal Palace, near Nongoma, as KwaZulu-Natal commemorates Heritage Month 2026. The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) has announced that thousands of maidens are expected to attend the event, with numbers anticipated to double this weekend. Heritage Month, celebrated in September under the theme "Celebrating our living Heritage: Strengthening the ties that bind us," aims to reflect on shared history, celebrate cultural diversity, and reinforce a sense of belonging grounded in constitutional values.

The second leg of the reed dance, Umkhosi Womhlanga, will run until September 13. The event provides an opportunity for South Africans to honor traditional values, such as purity, identity, and Ubuntu. MEC Mntomuhle Khawula emphasized the significance of this cultural and moral regeneration ceremony, noting that it attracts over 5,000 maidens who don colorful beads and traditional regalia.

Khawula explained that the reed dance celebrates Zulu culture, identity, and the spirit of Ubuntu, while promoting responsible citizenship and positive social development among young women. The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has been working towards inclusivity, redress, and cultural democracy in the heritage sector, enhancing the visibility of indigenous languages, music, rituals, traditional healing practices, craftsmanship, and oral histories.

Ngipheni Ngcobo, a 75-year-old virgin and regular attendee of traditional ceremonies, shared her commitment to her vow of chastity. She emphasized the importance of remaining pure and encouraging young women to resist worldly temptations. Duma, the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, revealed that the department has deployed resources to ensure the safety of maidens and guests traveling to the eMashobeni Royal Palace.

An inspection of 33 private buses revealed defective vehicles, which were suspended to prevent potential accidents.
