KZN ready for this year’s Reed Dance

KwaZulu-Natal is fully prepared for this year's Reed Dance ceremony, known as uMkhosi woMhlanga, to be held at the eMashobeni Royal Palace in Phongolo. Thousands of young women are anticipated to participate in the annual event, which takes place from Friday until Sunday. The main ceremony on Saturday will feature the maidens, adorned in colorful beads and traditional attire, showcasing their commitment to purity and abstinence as they present reeds to King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, the AmaZulu King.

Preparations are well underway, with final arrangements in place for the thousands of AmaZulu maidens expected to take part in this weekend's Reed Dance at the eMashobeni Royal Palace. Approximately 30,000 maidens are expected to attend the traditional event from across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond. The procession is set to be led by a Royal Princess, and the festivities will include traditional singing and dancing.

MEC Mntomuhle Khawula has emphasized the importance of safety for all attendees, urging travelers to prioritize their well-being. Accommodation for the maidens is ready, and preparations at the arena where the main event will take place have been completed. King Misuzulu kaZwelithini is now ready to welcome all the maidens, guests, and attendees who will be attending the Reed Dance celebrations at eMashobeni this weekend.

The department is calling on all those transporting the maidens and drivers heading to eMashobeni to exercise caution on the roads.
