Pat Utomi recalls surviving fatal accident 35 years ago

Political economist and former presidential candidate, Prof Pat Utomi, shared the story of his survival after a fatal accident 35 years ago in a Facebook post. The incident took place near Asaba and resulted in the death of his driver. Upon arrival at Boromeo Hospital in Onitsha, doctors informed the Chief of Surgery that Utomi had no pulse and was not breathing.

Despite this grim prognosis, the surgeon refused to give up and continued to fight for Utomi's life. Eventually, the medical team discovered Utomi was still alive and proceeded with surgery to address internal bleeding caused by the accident. Utomi's driver sadly perished in the accident. Reflecting on this harrowing experience, Utomi considers July a month of perpetual thanksgiving in his family.

He also recalled a similar near-death encounter during the July 7, 2005, terrorist attacks on London's transport system, which claimed 52 lives and left many injured. Utomi attributed his resilience to his faith and gratitude to God.
