Pas information chief: Zahid's speech signals Umno's new political alignment

KUALA LUMPUR: The 2026 Umno General Assembly saw Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Umno president, deliver a policy speech that analysts are interpreting as a declaration of political war, according to Pas information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari. Fadhli, who attended the assembly with a delegation from Pas, highlighted several key points from Zahid's speech as particularly significant.

These included his proposals on Tafahum Siyasi, Umno-Pas unity without a third party, the Grand Coalition, the Blue Malaysia agenda, and his criticism of broken political commitments.

Fadhli believes that Zahid's emphasis on Tafahum Siyasi, or political understanding, implies cooperation based on shared interests while allowing each party to retain its distinct identity. He also pointed out that Zahid's vision of Malay political unity would involve only Umno and Pas, without a third party, signaling a clear political intention.

Furthermore, Fadhli noted that the Blue Malaysia agenda, which Zahid proposed, seems to extend beyond electoral politics, outlining a longer-term national vision towards Malaysia's centenary of independence in 2057. This, combined with the political proposals presented in the speech, suggests that Umno is seeking to establish a broader direction for the country and its political landscape.

Zahid's speech, according to Fadhli, should be closely monitored as it may have implications for future political alignments. The Pas leader thanked Umno for the warm reception given to Pas representatives at the assembly.
