Korea, US hold public diplomacy forum on Global South cooperation

Korea and the United States convened a joint forum this week to explore avenues for enhancing strategic collaboration with nations in the Global South, announced Seoul's foreign ministry on Friday. The 2026 Korea-U.S. Public Diplomacy Forum convened at Georgetown University in Washington on Thursday, under the theme "The New International Order and the Global South: Expanding Horizons for Korea-U.S. Strategic Cooperation," as per the ministry.

The Global South encompasses a wide range of developing and emerging economies scattered across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. Officials from both countries deliberated on the evolving geopolitical and economic security dynamics within the Global South, as well as strategies to broaden their joint public diplomacy initiatives, according to the ministry.

Yoon Chu-sok, deputy chief of mission at the Korean Embassy in Washington, remarked in his congratulatory remarks that the Global South is gaining increasing importance due to its substantial population, vast economic scale, and rich reserves of critical minerals and resources. "We will continue to identify programs and events spanning various domains to further strengthen our partnership with the Global South," Yoon stated.
