Korane vows to reinstate 6,000 sacked county workers if re-elected Garissa governor

Former Garissa Governor Ali Bunow Korane has announced his intention to reintroduce 6,000 county workers he claims were dismissed following his departure from office if he secures re-election as Governor in the 2027 General Election. Korane, who held the position from 2017 to 2022, stated that his campaign for the seat was motivated by an unfinished development agenda and the insights gained during his initial tenure.

He pledged to prioritize projects related to water, healthcare, infrastructure, education, and employment, while also building upon the successes and learning from the mistakes of his previous administration. Korane acknowledged that his first administration had made errors, but believed that his experience would serve him well if he were to return to office.

Employment is a key focus area of his campaign, with promises to restore the jobs of the 6,000 workers who lost their positions after the 2022 election. Korane admitted that his initial administration had placed too much emphasis on county employment for job creation, and that his second term would see a shift towards supporting young people in establishing their own businesses to reduce dependence on county employment.

He also pledged to create a youth revolving fund to provide capital for startups without traditional collateral requirements. Water scarcity in Garissa Town was another major issue Korane highlighted as a priority, committing to finding a sustainable solution within his first two years in office. He stated that the problem had been a significant challenge for the town, and that the county would first determine the necessary investment scale before deciding whether to fund the project independently or seek national government assistance.

Korane acknowledged the shortcomings of his first administration, but expressed his readiness to serve Garissa residents better by completing abandoned projects and improving service delivery based on the lessons learned from his previous term.
